Matt and K-9 Ember

K-9 Ember

Hi, I’m Matt Cleveland. I grew up in Eagan, Minnesota, the third of four boys, my poor mom! From a young age, I loved being outdoors and staying active, something that would later shape much of my life.

Shortly after high school, I followed in my father’s footsteps and enlisted in the United States Army. I became a 63H Track Vehicle Mechanic and, after completing training, was stationed in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division for a year. I was then assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, where I served with the 1st Cavalry Division, attached to an infantry unit. I spent nine years there and completed three deployments to Iraq. During my time with 1st CAV, I served in recovery, meaning when a vehicle couldn’t make it back on its own power or a soldier couldn’t make it back on their own two feet, we were the ones called in. On my final deployment, I was struck by an IED. That day changed the course of my life and ended my plans for a full military career.

Since then, I have undergone multiple back procedures and surgeries, with more ahead. During my service, I was honored to receive several awards and medals, including the Purple Heart. I was honorably discharged November 14th, 2014.

Transitioning out of the military was one of the hardest battles I’ve faced. Because of my lifelong love for animals, I found healing in them. Shortly after getting discharged, I bought my horse Reno, who I still have today. Not long after that, I met my dog Tank. Tank was on “last call” at a shelter and scheduled to be euthanized the next day, so I brought him home with me that night. For the next 13 years, he became a lifeline during some of my darkest times and played a huge role in helping me adjust to civilian life.

After losing Tank last year, I wasn’t sure I could open my heart to another dog. But in time, I saw a post about Fox Red Labs, and something felt right. On December 14, I received Ember at eight weeks old from a wonderful family / breeder . She made the six hour drive to become my new battle buddy. From day one, we have been building an unbreakable bond. For years, I had dreamed of partnering with a Soldiers 6 dog, and now that dream is reality!

Here we are… Team Ember!
