Sally and K-9 Louie
K-9 Louie
My name is Sally Mixon. I’m the daughter of a marine and have twin brothers who are both currently serving in law enforcement (year 10). About ten years ago, I started an organization called Abijah’s where we incorporate retired racehorses working with our first responders and military struggling with PTSD among other mental health concerns. Over the last five years I have worked as well with Navy Special Warfare (NSW) serving our Navy SEAL population.
Within the last couple of years, I personally began to show symptoms of secondary trauma. I think working as a counselor in this field began to take a toll on my own mental health. My friend and co-worker, Deana Allen, had shared a lot about Soldier Six and how they helped her with a service dog. I had heard so much about you all but If I’m honest, there was some swallowing of my own pride I needed to do.
The stars aligned a year and half ago, and I got Louie, a French Bulldog. He has been such a blessing. What I envision Louie doing, is of course, helping my own medical issues, but also (when I change out his vest) to be there for the many clients we see at Abijah’s. He’s been coming to work with me since he was 8 weeks old and loves the horses, and all the people he gets to meet.
I am so very grateful for Soldier Six and would also love to possibly work more closely in supporting the amazing work you all do and helping get the word out to the people we see that Soldier Six is there to help as well.
Thank you for this opportunity.
